I've taken fencing before. Stopped doing it thought, because of lack of time and interest. It's a pretty interesting sport though. By the way, fencing swords = foils.

One of my friends does Fencing and does competitions and all that jazz, and says its really fun. I have the option to do some Fencing Instruction at school next year, but thats only if I switch out of another class. And my school is pretty lax about that stuff.

ehhh, seems like a intense lack of fencers on these forums...
Theres 3 different swords in fencing, all with unique traits. But for some reason foil seems to attract the most media. Which is very bad for the sport seeing as foil is the hardest to fence. But anyways if u guys want me too i could go a little more in depth about the sport. If like 2 or 3 of u reply and say you want me too, id be happy too. But until then...

I'd like to fence. Wish my school had a fencing program, but we can barely keep out of debt, so it's not likely to ever have one.

Okay wow first off they are not swords they are called weapons. There are three:
Sabre- Most Aggressive
Epee- 2nd Aggressive
Foil- Fairies...
Each one has a unique history behind it and unique traits
Sabre used to be used for calvery and in order to not hit the horses they slashed about the waist. It is the most violent and abbrasive of the three. It is also in my opinion the hardest. Then again I fence it so I am a bit jaded.
Epee evolved in 19th century Europe and was fought as "first to blood". Which means the first to draw blood wins. It differs from sabre and foil because the whole body is a target area and it is more of a thrusting weapon.
Foil- Even though this weapon was played as "to the death". It is fenced in a similar manner to Epee and differs slightly. The target area is the trunk of the bosy because one used to aim for major organs.
Okay so now you know and please stop refering to the weapons as swords.

Technically fencing is simply dueling with any kind of sword. It's simply that olympic and Sport fencning has become so popular that everyone thinks of those whenever they hear the word fencing. I've taken one class of historical fencing/swordsmanship. In it we briefely covered the two-handed long sword (German midieval style), Kendo (Japanese with the katana and everything), and rapier fencing. Of the three I'd be more likely to go into the two-handed midieval long sword or rapier fancing.
Learning how to fight with the long sword would just be cool, but rapier fencing is much faster. Kendo just seems over-done to me every once in a while. And truly it's not superior to the others and neither are the others to their counterparts.
Sabre fencing also seems cool though, but I've heard that some people end up developing arms that make them look like Popeye. Not exactly a look I'm going for...

haha, i thought i could get away without any weapon hostilities. Oh well. I, being a three-weaponist have to say that foil is not exactly for faries. Foil, while not very agressive, is a little bit of a mind game with the other person, it gets very complicated in some bouts, and to classfiy it as the 3rd least agressive is wrong. Alot more emphasis is put on defence in epee and epee bouts (not duels) are nothing but big mind games and take a very long time to finish up. Foil is much faster than epee. But then again, you do push harder in epee and use your strength and height a lot more in epee than you do foil. Hence the steriotype that foil fencers are faries. And to say that sabre is the hardest is also very wrong. The fact that you can use a cutting edge and your strength makes it alot easier. Sabre is actually easy on the non colledge/olympic level, because of the fact that it uses the cutting edge and its very fast. Sabre fencing is also very controversial. Meaning, that sabre is so fast that more often than not (literally) the fencers will hit each other at the same time causeing the lights to both go off. It is now up to the judge to decide and it could usually go either way. Because of the strength, intensity, and pain(if someone hits you hard enough to make you have to rub your arm, it was a mistake or they just want to show off, a true sabre fencer shouldent hit that hard) that the steriotype of saberists being big dumb monkeys comes in. And epee the steryotype of being dull matches comes in because they take so long. Altho sabre is quite hard to master, Comparing the weapons i hate to say is pretty much like comparing apples and oranges. Its all just opinion.
i forgot, fencing with "safe weapons" and gear is called, bouting in a competition
dueling is with bare blades and someone usually ends up dieing
the term for "sparring" in fencing (while rarley used) is technically assulting...lol
