I read the sports poll but MY favorite sport is the martial arts. Does anyone else take a form of martial arts? This is open to anyone though even if you don't take a form of martial arts but have a respect for it or an interest in it and want to talk about it.

My friend is studying to be a 3rd degree black belt in Shuan Fa Ken Po. He is really good at it, and has excellent dicipline. A lot of people take it to show off, but thats the totally wrong reason to learn it.

I used to study Kenpo and Judo for a while. But, due to lack of time, I had to stop. If I ever pick martial arts up again though, I'd probably be interested in learning either Jeet Kun Do or Ninpo. Either one would be cool with me.

I'm a boxer and I study a bit of Muay Thai. Trying to learn grappling right now (I'm joining wrestling next season and I'm looking for a Brazilian Ju-Jitsu dojo) so I can mix styles via UFC.

Anyway, he's teaching other buddies of mine, they call him Sensei. It looks pretty cool, and I wouldn't mind learning some myself.

I just joined a gym in LA for Jeet Kun Do, at the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts. currently learning trapping and slipping and basic movement. not bad i'd say.. only thing is that it's expensive.

I'm glad to see some other people interested in MA (martial arts). My MA is called Hapmudo it's based mostly on Hapkido but it has a bunch of other stuff added in. We do everything grappling, forms, sparring, weapons, tumbling etc. It will kick your butt some times but it is sooooo worth it!
this is info on Hapmudo http://www.hapmudo.net/default.html
this is my studio's info http://www.hapmudo.net/3annandale/Annandale.htm :cool:

Shut up, you guys. We're trying to discuss something here.
Does anyone here mix styles of fighting? Like combining boxing with wrestling or kickboxing w/ jiu-jitsu to become a more complete fighter in all aspects. I learned that grappling is very important as well, not just punching and kicking (how can you land a good hit on a guy when he's grabbing the back of your head and punches the crap out of your face?). This is based on the theory of Bruce Lee, which is now incorporated in MMA organizations like UFC.

I used to train in the Okonawan Sheri Ru style which I doubt I spelled right. My old sensai, I don't think I spelled that right either, was a true martial artist who trained in Asian and competed in tournaments and stuff. However, as I became a yellow belt, he quit to go open his own school instead of teaching at the YMCA. Our next sensai wasn't half the teacher out previous teacher was. So after I became a blue belt, I was old enough to realize that he wasn't a good teacher. So I quit, however I didn't stop. I trained myself in the art of my fists and my sword. I based it off the only style I knew though. Okonawan Sheri Ru.

used to take shaolin kenpo at united studios of self defense(i hate it i hate it i hate it i hate it it sucked and i hated it)
wow, you really must've hated it since you obviously didn't pay much attention to it
Shaolin = chinese
Kenpo = japanese
I took Tae Kwon Do when I was younger, and my feet are still faster than my hands, even though I'd never kick above the belt in a fight anymore. I was a red belt at Mountain Kim, which was next to black...in order to get black I had to re-learn and memorize all the forms I'd learned up until that point...I was 10 years old, and didn't have the patience to do so, so I quit
I want to take either Judo, Kenpo, or Aikido...but there aren't any places nearby that teach anything other than Tae Kwon Do and wannabe Muay Thai

I've taken Kenpo, Judo, Kung fu, tae kwon do and traditional karate for about seven years. I want to take kendo next just because it looks really fun and a lot of my friends are taking lessons.
Kenpo - Cant really acuratly describe this one. I find it highly effective though.
Kendo (Kenpo is the Korean version) is a nice art, but it's very expensive cuz of the gear you have to purchase, most likely beyond the $500 points.
Kung fu - Basis on powerfull attacks. Also includes a bit of grappling.
General Kung-fu is based on fluid movement and building momentum in your punches and kicks without using excess energy. Its emphasis on grappling is almost non-existant and has no techniques for fighting or defending on the ground.
Tae Kwon Do and traditional Karate - Uses your whole body as a powerfull weapon. Strength from attacks lye in hips and shoulders and good positioning is very important.
Tae Kwon Do is much more focused on leg strengths and techniques, and Karate is more well-rounded when comparing stand-up. Both have very little emphasis on grappling and are helpless on the ground.

well. i'm currently taking three. kali (filipino stick fighting), judo, and an art derived from choi kwang do, which is basically self defense and then some. i took aikido in the past, but decided to quit and take up judo.
they all have their good points, as most martial arts do.

I'm a Kung Fu practitioner now... before I learned Tae Kwon Do, Kempo, Karate, Aikido and Wushu. The only reason I moved to Kung Fu is that TKD, Aikido and Wushu don't teach you how to fight in the street. Karate is better. But I don't say that TKD, Aikido and Wushu is bad. My style is Shan Dong Shaolin.
