True, but Half Life is still a horrible, unoriginal game as well, it brought us only one thing: the most easily modded FPS engine in the history of the known world.

Saying something is the Best Game over any other game makes it a little hard to judge. I mean, comparing a sports game to an RPG is like comparing an orange to the number 4. The elements are way too different to make any solid arguments. I still don't get how Gaming magazines can choose the "Game of the Year" games.

But, I'll stay true to the thread and instead list them by genre.

First Person Shooter: Unreal Tournament Series (Mainly 2k3 for now until 2k4 comes out)

RPG: Final Fantasy 7 (my Favorite FF always changes with each new one, only because I stick to that FF's story 'till the end. When it comes to replay value and stuff, I can always go back and say, "I wanna play FF7"

Action/RPG: Legend of Zelda series (Mainly OoT.)

Arcade Shooter: Time Crisis 3/Crisis Zone (tie)

Shooter: Contra 3: Alien Wars

Beat 'em Up: Streets of Rage 2 (especially Mania Mode)

Platformer: Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse (NES old-school style)

Sports: NBA Live 2k4

Real Time Strategy: Starcraft: Brood Wars

Adventure: Resident Evil 2 (trust me, Survival Horror is basically Adventure)

Puzzle: Super Puzzle Fighter 2 TURBO

Personally I think Halo was a generally horrible game. The only reason it ever became big is because all the tools who couldn't afford PC's kept whining for a FPS (which, if you're old enough to remember, were born on PC's). Console gamers could have been given a straw, a handful of spitballs, and a paper target of an enemy soldier to stick on their television, and they would have called it "The best FPS of all time," just because it's the only one they had. The PC community has been enjoying hundreds upon hundreds of FPS games for the past 10 years that completely blow Halo away in every aspect. I do personally own the PC version (The only platform FPS's have any business being on, even to this day) and it's mediocre at best. It can't touch the likes of Unreal 2004, Red Faction or Serious Sam.

Oddly enough, I have to agree. Its one of those games were you think it really sux and then you go back and play it and are like 'oh yea this is actually pretty cool' but still, not as good as the other ones (lol tho ironically my fave game charactor of all time happens to be in it)
It just seems to be..lacking..in..eh..something. Cant really say what. That and the only person I like in the entire party was Quina. ( and i guess Vivi is okay) Its hard to get into a game where all of the main charators suck.

Eh..sorry wasnt tryin to rag on yoru fave game or antyhing. Just never met anyone who likes the game so much, intersting. :p

I know where this is going, dont even start with that.
Way back when I had a super nintendo I wasnt a hardcore gamer and didnt even know what an 'RPG' was. I mostly stuck to (Star Fox, Donkey Kong, stuff like that. Mario RPG was my first RPG)
I want to get the remake of six tho. Just tryin to save up for it.

Even if I did play all of the oldschool ones it really wouldnt change my opinion of nine. Just not my favorite. Not that I dont like it, I like it a lot just didnt quite lie up to the FF name in my opinion. (and no, seven is not my favorite FF either)

It was a fun game and all but it just was nothing compared to FFX. ( My favorite)They took away all the best charactors. Like Tidus, the only main charavotor i like from the FF series.
Also, Lulu why the hell did they getta rid of Lulu? I know she was IN the game but still.
I say they got rid of her because its a fact that shes with Wakka. So putting her in an all female party would have shattered any dissolusions any male gamers had of an all female threesome. Hence ; Paine she just screams lesbian biker chick. :lol:

Best Games ever (and why the games in that series after them sucked)

Final Fantasy VII - Killer story, gameplay, graphics (at the time), and engine. Can't ask for more.

Final Fantasy 8-"X-2" sucked because they were follow ups to quite possibly the greatest 3D RPG of all time. So anything less than VII was going to seem sucky.

Secret of Mana - Again, awesome story, great mechanics, and magic/machine combinations again.

Legend of Mana - Was a good game, just... not as good as it's predecessor. Anything that came after Secret of Mana was fightning an uphill battle in the snow, poorly equipped.

Finally,
Chrono Trigger - Quite possibly, the greatest RPG of all time. Anime stylings, killer engine, and a story that makes most novels weep, this game belongs on top.

Chrono Cross - Sucked. Not because the game itself was bad, but because, compared to Chrono Trigger, it was terrible. Vs. most other RPGs it was like an 8 or a 9 of 10. But compared to Chrono Trigger, the only game that scores even close to a 9 or a 10 is FFVII.

One more thing, to all of you who think fighting/action/shooting games are the Best Games Ever, I would just like to inform you that in a contest at www.gamefaqs.com, a grand total of 1 "non-RPG" made it into the last 8 games of their Best. Game. Ever. Polls. Oh, yeah, each day about 120,000 people voted on the games. And, just for the record, the finals came down to: Chrono Trigger and FFVII. Guess who won?

Final Fantasy VII - Killer story, gameplay, graphics (at the time), and engine. Can't ask for more.

Final Fantasy 8-"X-2" sucked because they were follow ups to quite possibly the greatest 3D RPG of all time. So anything less than VII was going to seem sucky.

Secret of Mana - Again, awesome story, great mechanics, and magic/machine combinations again.

Legend of Mana - Was a good game, just... not as good as it's predecessor. Anything that came after Secret of Mana was fightning an uphill battle in the snow, poorly equipped.

Finally,
Chrono Trigger - Quite possibly, the greatest RPG of all time. Anime stylings, killer engine, and a story that makes most novels weep, this game belongs on top.

Chrono Cross - Sucked. Not because the game itself was bad, but because, compared to Chrono Trigger, it was terrible. Vs. most other RPGs it was like an 8 or a 9 of 10. But compared to Chrono Trigger, the only game that scores even close to a 9 or a 10 is FFVII.

One more thing, to all of you who think fighting/action/shooting games are the Best Games Ever, I would just like to inform you that in a contest at www.gamefaqs.com (http://www.gamefaqs.com/), a grand total of 1 "non-RPG" made it into the last 8 games of their Best. Game. Ever. Polls. Oh, yeah, each day about 120,000 people voted on the games. And, just for the record, the finals came down to: Chrono Trigger and FFVII. Guess who won?

FF8 through X-2 clearly did not "suck." Otherwise no one would've bought them and there would not have been so many good reviews about them. Maybe when compared to each other they would obviously have different elements that would make people like one more than another but it definitely does not make the others suck. Yeah, also have you noticed that all those polls are basically just popularity contests? 120,000 people do not represent the whole gaming community. Honestly, some of the action/fighting/shooting/sports games are some of the best ever created. Why? It's because of the fun factor that comes with it. The reason why some people think more highly of those games over RPGs is because of multiplayer value. RPGs are fun and all to play solo, but that is as far as it goes. The only thing left after beating an RPG is to talk about it with a friend who also has beat the game... that and to go on a message board like this to talk to gamers like us. But back to the point of those other genres, the multiplayer aspect definitely help make the game worth while. Nothing beats the rush of going to a LAN party or going online with an FPS with your friends or random strangers all over the world. Another example would be one for sports games. Look at that national Madden ( I think that's the game that was held ) tournament. The game goes right down to the wire when you are playing not only for fun, but the prizes at the end. You just cannot get that kind of experience with an RPG.


As for my opinion for the best game ever created, I would go with FFX and FFX-2 as a whole (they go together only because FFX-2 was just a book end and you really cannot get too much of the game unless you played X) Square/Enix really took the time on the characters. Also the graphics were really up sky high when they made it and the OST was excellent (more on X's part. The whole pop-ish feel of X-2 was a little cheesy for me) If you would want to discuss that with me, just go right ahead and PM me.

I however think it wasnt that great. Also, this is just me but I have never seen a good review of X-2. Nor do I know anyone in RL who likes it all that much (and I will say that soundtrack, is nothing compared to Nobou Uematsus work) So by my experiance and opinion, it sux. Is that okay with you?

And yes, I do agree with you on that. The people who just automitcally asume that youve never played any other RPGs if you really like FFVII. My friend loves that game, but hes played the entire series, Desgeae, Symphonia, and god knows how many others. He just likes the game.

What I think is funny is that people who say think they are SOO hardcore are exactly the same as the fanboys.
Only instead of LIKING something becuase its popular they are DISLIKING everything that is popular and obviously, below them. You know, like people who are 'differant like everyone else'.

The clearly sux part can be true. When something is just that terrible, you can't deny the crapola that was created. "Clearly does not suck" is argue able because it is based on opinion. I think of games that are based on that quote as something that had a good idea running, but it could use so much more work. Games that are bad can't be helped too much.

As for the X-2 OST... thank God Nobou took no part of it. I loved "Real Emotion" and "1000 Words" and all, but some of the music was just not FF-ish. Whenever I plan a new FF, Nobou's music always gives me a feel of starting something fresh. The whole, "I'm starting a new epic journey" is part of what makes me love the FF series so much. One good example of something that gave me that feeling is in FF7 in the overworld theme (I think the track is Cloud's Theme) just when you leave Midgar. I loved FFX's OST because of the traveling theme. Right now, I could go on and on about the great music Nobou has done, but that's for another thread. I'll probably get on that sometime soon.

Oh, forgot about 'Real Emotion. That song was great, but the rest of it, just blah. ( X had my favorite music, and disspite its 'not as good as the othersness' IX had an extra awesome OST) I also have pleanty more to say about Nobou, but Ill wait until you bring up that thread. ;)
