What's the saddest anime/manga storyline that you've watched? What was so sad about it?

The plot of Samurai X. During the revolution Kenshin kills a man who is engaged to a woman named Tomoe. Kenshin meets Tomoe and Tomoe knows Kenshin killed her fiancé, but Kenshin doesn't know she was engaged to him. They eventually fall in love and the shogunate wants to kill Kenshin because he is an uber powerful assassin and Tomoe was to be the bait for their trap. Kenshin fights his way through 3 ninja and gets pretty battered and cut up, then he fights this old guy who wears metal wrist and shin guards and fights with martial arts instead of a weapon. He starts kickin' Kenshin's ass and when he pulls out Tomoe's dagger (which he stole) Kenshin kinda blacks out and starts flashing back, then Tomoe runs out and grabs the bad guy's hand to keep him from stabbing Kenshin and Kenshin blindly swings his sword, still not paying attention to what's really happening, but just hoping he hits the guy to save his own life. And he does kill the other guy. But Tomoe's in between Kenshin and the bad guy and gets cut in half too. It's really sad, and it's the reason why Kenshin won't kill in Rurouni Kenshin.

I think Grave Of The Fireflies beats Samurai X, not by much. The ending to Beserk is sad in a way as is Cowboy Bebop.

I'd have to say Jin-Roh: The Wolf Birgade. The whole movie just sucked the joy outa ya and left you feeling really depressed afterwards. It was so damn sad, but if it could do that, then it's a great movie in my book.

I agree with you on the Grave of the Fireflies thing. It really is sad in all aspects and it made me cry so much. That's probably the saddest thing ever... because I waste food all the time so much and seeing that movie STILL didn't change me... which is bad. @_@

Samurai X is a good one, Cowboy Bebop was kind of sad at the end. There were a lot of sad parts in Fushigi Yuugi and Ceres: Celestial Legend too.

Personally, I found the first two Samurai X OVA's funny. I mean.. I HATED Tomoe from the point I saw her. I just didn't like her whatsoever. Now Kaoru I loved. She was so cute! What got me was the Samurai X OVA, Reflection.
*SPOILER* I mean.. c'mon.. Kenshin dying was terrible. I was going to cry, but I did yell at my TV screen, :) I'm having a major brain fart, so I'll edit sometime.

Samurai X, the whole thing. First Kenshin kills his own wife by accident. how sad is that? And then he goes wandering again, and he meets kaoru. They have a son, but soon after that kenshin feels like he needs to repent for all the people he had killed.he gets a desiese from one of the places he goes to, leaves his wife for many years, comes back home to his wife and dies quietly in her arms.
and..is that sad or what?

Warning: I'm sure my post is bound to have some spoilers. So be warned. I don't wanna read any posts that say "bastard! u just ruined it for me!!!!!1!!!11!!!"
Well, I can't really think of any anime series/movies that were sad throughout it's entirety. I can think of sections of anime/mangas though. =] But I'm pretty fragile with emotions, so something can effect me easily. >_>;;
Like most of you have said already: Samurai X. But just Seisouhen for me. That was so heartbreaking. ;___; Trust and Betrayal didn't get to me as much, but I'm sure the manga version will...once Viz actually gets to printing that arc. x__X;;
Another one: Fullmetal Alchemist. There are some scences that were quite sad. Especially when ~*~*~SPOILER~*~*~ Hughes died. ;_______; I screamed at my computer when that happened. ^^;;
Full Moon wo Saga****e was sad when Mitsuki found out about Eichi-kun. *sniffle* My god that was angsty!
The last volume of Wish is another sad one. .___.
Um...I'm know there're others. But my brain's dead. ~pokes at it~

i think love hina because it took all of the 14 novel to find out who keitaro's girl from the past was but then naru runs away when he was about to find out and it left me at a cliffhanger it was said when she ran away being afraid that teh girl wasnt her. but finally they found otu it was Naru which really was sort of leaving you with a sense of happiness that made you cry.

blue gender would have been sad if it wasn't so freaking stupid. Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack was sad because besides all the main characters dying, the Sazabi(undoubtedly the coolest mobile suit ever) was destroyed that really brought me down

I think that Revolutionary Girl Utena was pretty sad story. It almost made me cry, and the series was so short. But, yeah, I also agree that Samurai X was sad too.

i'd have to agree with a lot of people here on how samurai x was sad....but in reflections when he actually dies....and his scare had faded away....it slowly sank in and it was like, oh my god he's really dead...and then i seriously cried for 15-20 min. seriously....cowboy bebop last episode was also pretty sad...the first time i saw it you don't know what's gonna happen and then he died...i was like no way and started to lightly cry...then every time i've rewatched it i always start to cry in the middle when he leaves the bebop and leaves faye crying till the very end....i'm a sensitive kinda guy
